The Rise of the Rookie Goalkeepers in 2024

The 2024 NHL season has held its share of surprises, and among the most exciting stories has been the rise of rookie goalies Joseph Woll of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Yaniv Perets of the Carolina Hurricanes...

These two have gone from being virtually unknown to being household names. Something we haven’t seen in years.

Let’s start with Woll. Maple Leafs fans are all too familiar with goaltending drama—it’s almost a rite of passage for the team. But Woll brings a consistency and calmness that the team has been desperate for. In a November game against Tampa Bay, he made 38 saves, including a stunning glove save in the third period. It electrified fans, and rightly so. He doesn’t just stop pucks; he breathes life into the team. Leafs Nation is buzzing for Woll, and the atmosphere at Scotiabank Arena is electric every time he steps on the ice.

On the other hand, there’s Yaniv Perets, a name few fans knew at the start of the season. Yet he’s taken over the Hurricanes’ net. With sharp reflexes and an almost supernatural ability to read the game, he impresses. For example, in a game against the Rangers earlier this season, he stopped 42 shots in a tight overtime contest. Perets is a fierce competitor who thrives under pressure.

What sets these two goalies apart is not just their skill, but also their composure. Rookie goalies are often expected to be nervous, but not Woll and Perets. Whether it’s Woll’s calm demeanor or Perets’ intense focus, they’re shattering expectations and showing the hockey world that rookies can shine under pressure.

Of course, they still have a long way to go and will have to prove they can maintain this level throughout the season. But for now, they’re giving fans plenty to cheer about.

This fresh look in the rookies is a reminder of why we love the NHL: anything can happen. The league remains unpredictable and exciting, and Woll and Perets are making this season unforgettable.
